USW Local #318 Multi-Skilled Training and Apprentice Program

USW Local #318’s Apprenticeship Program is a structured pathway into the construction trades — with paid on-the-job training, classroom instruction, and union membership from day one.

Apprentices work alongside experienced journey-level tradespeople on real projects across New Jersey and Delaware, building skills in one of eight construction trades.

The program takes two to four years depending on the craft, and graduates earn recognized credentials, full wages, and long-term career opportunities.

Key Qualifications

  • At least 18 years old
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Willing to travel to job sites throughout New Jersey and Delaware
  • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions

Program Benefits

  • Earn while you learn — paid from day one
  • Union membership and benefits start immediately
  • Medical coverage through the union’s “Cadillac plan”
  • Pension benefits
  • Pay increases at every level of advancement

What Our Apprentices Are Saying

The Apprenticeship was an amazing opportunity for me. It was not easy, but it was definitely worth it. I learned a lot. I’m still learning. And I feel like it’s an opportunity that everyone should take advantage of and I’m just very grateful that I have had the opportunity because it changed my life.

– Graduate Wendella Jones, Electrician

It was a great opportunity for me to start a career. Without the program I wouldn’t have known where to start to learn surveying.

– Kristopher Layton, Surveyor Assistant
