Apprentice Program

United Steelworkers Local #318 represents skilled tradespeople and craft workers throughout New Jersey and Delaware, supporting members in heavy construction, infrastructure, and industrial projects across the region. Local #318 is committed to strengthening careers, promoting safety, and expanding opportunities for workers in a variety of essential trades that build and maintain the backbone of our communities.

The Local #318 Apprenticeship Program offers a structured pathway for individuals seeking solid, long‑term careers in construction and industrial crafts. Through a combination of paid on‑the‑job training and classroom instruction, apprentices develop the skills, knowledge, and credentials needed to become journey‑level workers. The program emphasizes hands-on experience, technical learning, safety practices, and collaboration with experienced tradespeople.

Apprentices can pursue training in a range of construction trades:

  • Electrician: Installing, wiring, and testing electrical systems used on major projects.
  • Craft Laborer: Supporting all aspects of construction sites, from site preparation to assisting specialized trades.
  • Surveyor Assistant: Helping survey crews measure and lay out project sites according to design plans.
  • Carpenter: Building and installing structural components that form the framework of projects.
  • Reinforcing Metal Worker: Placing and securing steel reinforcement used in concrete structures.
  • Equipment Operator: Controlling heavy machines, such as excavators and loaders, to shape job sites and move materials.
  • Cement Mason: Working with concrete to ensure smooth, durable surfaces and structural elements.
  • Dockbuilder/Piledriver: Constructing and reinforcing support structures, including docks, bridges, and foundations.

Completing the apprenticeship leads to recognized credentials and positions for stable careers with competitive wages, benefits, and opportunities for advancement. Local #318’s program is designed to give new workers the training and support they need to succeed, while also ensuring the skilled workforce necessary to build our infrastructure today and into the future.
